1 Corinthians 11:24b
...he broke it [the bread] and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me."
The bread of communion symbolizes the body of Jesus and the atoning work He performed for us through His death on the Cross. He not only died, but also the wounds He suffered were for our healing:
Isaiah 53:5: "But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed."
1 Peter 2:24: "'He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; 'by his wounds you have been healed.'"
Matthew 8:16-17: "When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 'He took up our infirmities
and bore our diseases.'"
In our passage today, Paul reminds us that Jesus made it very clear (as He served the first communion to His disciples): the purpose of the act was to "do this in remembrance of me." In other words, the real power of communion is in our remembering of the tremendous price Jesus paid for our salvation. So the ritual and the elements used in the Lord's Supper are unimportant. The benefit comes to us as our faith is stirred through our identification with what Jesus did for us personally -- the physical and emotional deliverance that He provided.
What does communion mean to you? Has it grown in significance or is it just another meaningless church ritual? When was the last time you allowed the sacrifice of Jesus to really mean something to you? What price do you place on your salvation?
