“We've Already Won”

1 Corinthians 15:56-57

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Thoughts for Today:

Our passage today reveals a great truth: "...the power of sin is the law." Think about it: How could God cause humanity to see the reality of our hopeless situation -- to abandon our self righteous attitudes and seek the salvation of Jesus? He gave us the Law.

God knows that it is human nature to want the very things we are told we can't have. Paul said it this way, in Romans 7:7-9: "What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, 'You shall not covet'. But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of coveting. Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died."

Still, a lot of people think they can achieve a right standing with God through their good works. By their feeble attempts to follow the Law or their own moral standards. It invariably leads to comparisons to other people who appear to be more sinful or less holy than they are. But God doesn't grade on the curve. He doesn't look at us in relationship to other people. (Romans 3:23: "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.") If we aren't as good as Jesus, then we will be judged according to His perfect standard -- no matter how good we might look when compared to other people.

So the Law provides knowledge of sin, but knowledge alone can't save us. We need a Savior to redeem and provide us with power in our battle against sin. That's the Gospel message. And the Good News is we've already won! (Romans 6:14: "For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.")

Questions to Ponder:

What consumes your thoughts? Is it career, money, or material possessions? Paul tells us that coveting only leads to more coveting. So what should we think about when we begin to struggle with sin and temptation? The Cross of Calvary. Where will you focus your thoughts today? The battle's been won, will you receive the victory?
