1 Corinthians 1:26
Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.
My daughter Amanda is really impressed with me. Why? Because I am really good at adding and subtracting fractions (plus a wide variety of other Fourth Grade skills). I wonder if she will still be in awe of my mathematical prowess when she begins calculus.
I recently finished third in a golf tournament. Sounds pretty good, right? However, I won't tell you my handicap, who I played against, or the size of the field. If the scale is small enough, anyone can look impressive.
I'm sure you won't be surprised to know my name will never be found in the book of "Who's Who in America." Most of the time people look at me and don't even bother to wonder, "Who's he?" Why? Because, like me, the majority of us are nobodies. In our passage today, Paul tells us to remember who we were before we were called. Not in some hyper-magnified, we're all special, namby-pamby sort of way. But with an accurate appraisal of who we were before Christ. Most of us were not wise, influential, or born into elite families. We were just ordinary people.
I get so tired of hearing about actors, musicians, sports figures, industry leaders, or those involved in government who have accepted Christ as if we should be impressed. I think it's great when anyone is saved, but famous people are nothing special in God's economy. Look around -- celebrities are the minority. God majors in common people. People just like you and me.
The Cross helps to remind me of what I used to be: a sinner who was destined for destruction. Although I might still be a sinner, my sins have been forgiven and my life is redeemed by the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior. That alone makes me special. Not what I've done in this life, but the life Christ gave for me. Have you become overly impressed with celebrities? Remember, we all come equally before God.
